  2. ABOUT SHPFLTNAT FONT VERSION 1.8 (June 22, 1989)

  6. This package should contain the following files:

  8. Shpfl -- a downloadable postscript font
  9. Shpfltnat.bmap -- Macintosh screen version of the Shpfltnat font in sizes 12,
  10. 14, 18, 24 and 36
  11. Read me Shpfltnat 1.8 -- the file you are reading (if you can read) in Optima
  12. 12.

  16. I originally created the shpfltnat font simply to have nice-looking sharps,
  17. flats, and naturals in my dissertation, which is laser printed. Adobe's Sonata
  18. font has great-looking musical characters, but the ascending and descending
  19. values are so great that using simple sharps, flats, and naturals in the middle
  20. of double-spaced 12-point text turns the line spacing into something like
  21. quintuple spacing. Yucko. So I created Shpfltnat in order to have these
  22. characters for my dissertation, and added some other characters: whole, half,
  23. quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes and rests (stems up and stems down), common
  24. and cut time symbols, and a fermata.
  25.  
  26. For version 1.1, directional arrows (to outline gestural shapes), a dot (to
  27. follow note values), beamed eighth and sixteenth notes, and two squiggles were
  28. added.
  29. For the Version 1.2, Roman numerals both upper-and lower case (for so-called
  30. Roman numeral analysis), the numbers 1 through 8 with carats over them (to
  31. denote scale degrees in Schenkerian analysis), and a few symbols for tonal
  32. analysis: super- and subscripted sharps and flats, diminished and half-
  33. diminished symbols, and diminished and half-diminished symbols followed by a
  34. superscripted '7.'

  36. Version 1.2.1 added hearts (for Valentines Day).
  37.  
  38. Version 1.2.2 added Hauptstimme, Nebenstimme, and ChoraleHaupstimme signs.
  39.  
  40. Version 1.3 added snap pizzicato, bowing, slurs, various accents, and a smile
  41. face and frown face.
  42.  
  43. Version 1.4 added coda sign, bar lines, trill stuff, Rhythmic Haupstimme sign
  44. and beam extenders.
  45.  
  46. Version 1.5 added various other arrows, mordents, tremolandi and miscellaneous
  47. characters.
  48.  
  49. Version 1.6 added card suits and various repeating patterns and other dingbats.
  50.  
  51. Version 1.7 added minims, D.S., Pedal signs, recording copyright signs and a
  52. few other dingbats.

  54. Version 1.8 added thirty time signatures, bringing the total number of
  55. characters to exactly 200. The current version has just about all the text
  56. characters needed for scholarly writings on music. Future versions will not be
  57. available as shareware.

  59. Shpfltnat 1.8 was created with Fontographer from Altsys. Version 1.8 is the
  60. LAST to be released as shareware. An IBM PC version is published by ATECH
  61. Software, Carlsbad, California.

  65. For the great unwashed, here is how to use the enclosed font:
  66.  
  67. 1) Copy the file 'Shpfl' into the system folder of your startup disk.
  68. 2) Install the fonts in the file 'Shpfltnat.bmap' into your system file using
  69. Font/DA mover. You need only install the sizes you intend to use (no matter
  70. what size you use and no matter how crappola it looks on screen, it will print
  71. out smoothly on a PostScript© printer).
  72. 3) Use the font in your application and print away on your PostScript© printer.
  73. (Shpfltnat is not at all recommended for use on an ImageWriter or any other
  74. non-PostScript© printer)

  78. Version 1.8 of Shpfltnat is Shareware -- i.e., NOT free. If you decide to use
  79. and/or keep Shpfltnat, you are obliged to send a tax-deductible contribution of
  80. at least $10.01 to the Columbia University Music Department, 703 Dodge Hall,
  81. Columbia University, New York, NY 10025. If you do not erase all copies of
  82. Shpfltnat 1.8 within two weeks after receiving a copy, you MUST send the check.
  83. Note that over 700 downloads of versions 1.0 through 1.6 generated exactly
  84. three checks, and I'm sick of the cheapness of users - f'God's sake, it's a tax
  85. deductible expense!

  300. NOTES ON REPEATING CHARACTERS:
  301.  
  302. Several characters in the font are set up for printing repeating patterns. Most
  303. notable among them is the extended trill, using characters B, N and M; B begins
  304. the trill, N makes repeating squiggles, and M tails off the trill. Shift-option
  305. P repeated again and again will make a continuous piano keyboard. A length of
  306. musical staff will be formed by repeating the equal key. Several other
  307. repeating patterns such as waves, boxes and triangles are evident in the
  308. keyboard maps.

  311. USERS OF EARLIER VERSIONS PLEASE NOTE: the fermata sign has been moved from
  312. shift-option f to shift-option b ("birdseye"). This was done to make room for
  313. the superscripted flat sign.
